NAKHON RATCHASIMA - A wild bull elephant killed a tourist exercising near his tent at a campground in Khao Yai National Park on Monday morning.

A park ranger said the elephant was in rut and had previously killed two local residents.

The attack occurred at the campground of the Kho Yor 4 (Khlong Pla Kang) national park conservation unit in tambon Wang Mee of Wang Nam Khieo district about 5.30am.

The ill-fated camper was identified as Jirathachai Jiraphatboonyathorn from Muang district of Lop Buri.

Witnesses said the 69-year-old man was working out, walking near his tent about an hour before sunrise and he encountered Phlai Oiwan, a wild male elephant feeding outside his forest boundary.

The elephant rushed at the man, grabbed him with his trunk, slammed him to the ground and stomped on him. He was killed instantly, about 20 metres from his tent.

Other campers watched in horror. No one dared to leave their tent to help, fearing for their own safety.

Khao Yai rangers and local police rushed to the scene and scared the elephant away.

A doctor and rescue workers examined the victim, who had bled through his mouth and nose and suffered broken limbs and multiple other injuries.

CCTV footage shows two wild elephants breaking through the perimeter fence of Ban Mai Sai Thong School in Khao Chakan district, Sa Kaeo, late Wednesday night, causing extensive damage and raising concerns over student and community safety.

SA KAEO, Thailand – Local authorities are calling for urgent government action after two wild elephants broke into a local school in eastern Thailand late Wednesday night.

CCTV footage from Ban Mai Sai Thong School in Khao Chakan district captured the incident at 11:36 p.m. The video shows two elephants approaching from a main road before tearing down the school’s perimeter fence. One elephant used its trunk and feet to crush the gate, while the second followed shortly after.

School officials and village leaders inspected the site Thursday morning, reporting significant damage to the steel fencing and surrounding trees.

“We were fortunate this happened at night when no classes were in session,” said Thakoorn Kongchai the school’s deputy director. “Our primary concern is what might happen if they return during the day. It poses a lethal threat to students and staff.”

The village head urged relevant agencies to provide a long-term solution, noting that wild elephants are increasingly encroaching on community areas. Local residents report living in fear, with many now afraid to leave their homes after dark. (TNA)

BURI RAM - An upset bull elephant attacked its owner and damaged two vehicles while being forced to mate in a field outside an elephant village in the north of Buri Ram province.

The incident occurred in a dry paddy field in Ban Non That, in tambon Tha Muan, Satuek district, about 11.30am on Monday.

The owner of the cow elephant had hired the bull to service his animal.

While the bull's owner, Somporn Sudthiso, 35, was urging 19-year-old Pet-uthai to mate with the female, the male elephant became increasingly agitated and then turned on and attacked Mr Somporn.

It also attacked and smashed the two men's vehicles, which were parked in the field.

Livestock officials were called to the scene. They used low-dose tranquiliser darts to calm the bull elephant. It took about two hours for the drug to take effect.

Mr Somporn's lungs were ruptured during the attack. He was rushed to Satuek hospital.
